    Learning objective

By the end of this micro-lesson you will be able to describe at least three physical and three mental benefits of regular yoga practice.

    Concept

The benefits of yoga are well documented. They accumulate with consistent practice — even 10 to 15 minutes daily produces measurable change over weeks.

Physical benefits: Improved flexibility — even one session produces noticeable change in range of motion. Increased functional strength throughout the body. Better posture — yoga develops awareness of alignment and counteracts the effects of prolonged sitting. Reduced pain — particularly lower back, neck, and joint discomfort. Improved breathing capacity through regular pranayama practice.

Mental and emotional benefits: Reduced stress — yoga activates the parasympathetic nervous system, lowering cortisol levels measurably. Improved sleep — regular practitioners report falling asleep faster and sleeping more deeply. Greater focus — the sustained concentration required in yoga transfers to daily cognitive tasks. Emotional regulation — yoga builds the capacity to observe thoughts and feelings without reacting automatically. Increased self-awareness — practitioners develop a clearer, kinder relationship with their own body and mind.

    Key point

Benefits are cumulative. The student who practises gently for 15 minutes every day will experience more benefit than one who practises intensely once a week. Consistency is the most important variable.

    Common misconception

You do not need to be flexible to do yoga. Flexibility is a result of yoga practice, not a prerequisite for it. If you can breathe, you can practise yoga.

    Self-check

Name three physical and three mental benefits of yoga practice from memory. If you cannot, review the concept section before moving on.

    Reflection prompt

Which benefit matters most to you personally right now? How will you know when you are experiencing it?
